RAMS Development XV had their three-match winning streak snapped as they went down 13-5 at Richmond Vikings (2nd XV) in a physical contest where both defences were phenomenal.

On a freezing Wednesday night in south-west London, both sides were snuffed out until the end of the first quarter, the hosts getting in front with a try converted by Werner Nel.

The fly-half added a penalty as the first half came to a close for 10-0, and despite the two sides showing attacking intent, the third quarter also proved scoreless.

Rams were perhaps guilty of trying to over-play at times, but a patient and well-worked team try was finished by wing Alex Mannhardt on 73 minutes to give the away side hope of a comeback success.

However, Richmond replied almost immediately as replacement Tom Smith kicked a penalty to nudge his side two scores clear, and the Londoners’ experience and organisation eventually saw them hold on for victory in a highly competitive contest.

Among the eye-catching performers for Rams were young hooker Harry Bicknell, back rows Mikey Duda and Harry Stone, and Mannhardt’s fellow wing, Jack Rampton.

The two clubs will lock horns in National One as Old Bath Road hosts Friday Night Lights on December 6.
