IT is with great sadness, and more than a heavy heart, we announce the passing of former player, teammate and friend to so many at the club, Rob Castell.

He was a much-loved and familiar face around the club, having played his way through the Minis and juniors, under the guidance of coaches and club legends such as Joe Bell and Roger Batchelor.

The club was a huge part of Rob’s life, and over the years he made friendships and memories which would last a lifetime.

As a player, he was everything you would want in a teammate. A powerful back row who hit hard, never took a backward step and gave everything for the shirt.

Rob was known for his ferocious style of play and his tremendous competitiveness.

He could also turn his hand to playing in the centre when required, always putting the team first and doing whatever was needed.

Rob’s building expertise was called upon when the new clubhouse was built in 2014.

He spent countless hours doing all he could to ensure it met expectations and his commitment and passion for the club were once again on full show.

For those who knew Rob, his qualities as a friend and teammate went far beyond what he did on the rugby pitch.

Rob, or Bobby as many knew him, was the sort of person who made people feel welcome and loved.

He was a great friend to his teammates, both on and off the field, and someone people could rely on.

He shared countless laughs, adventures and unforgettable moments with those around him, and his friendship meant a great deal to so many people.

Rob was also a big part of the club’s sevens teams, playing on many memorable tours to Dubai, Benidorm, Kinsale, Amsterdam and the glamorous Isle of Wight.

These tours were about much more than rugby, and Rob was at the heart of the camaraderie, fun and friendships that made them so special.

He was part of the winning team in Benidorm in 2000, a fantastic achievement for a bloke with questionable pace.

For his former teammates, Rob will be remembered not just for the player he was, but for the person he was.

He was loyal, generous with his friendship, full of character and always ready to share a laugh, at his own expense if it got a giggle.

Rob was someone who embodied that spirit. His passing will be felt deeply by all those who had the privilege of playing alongside him, growing up with him at the club, touring with him or simply calling him a friend.

He leaves behind his wife, Liz, and his two boys, Stanley and Bertie. Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with them, and all of Rob’s family and friends at this difficult time.

Rob will be greatly missed, but never forgotten. His name, his friendship and the memories he created with so many people will always remain a part of the club.
