ANT Marris thanked his coaches and teammates after putting in another sterling performance during his 50th Rams appearance.
The loose-head prop helped secure a succession of scrum penalties and was also conspicuous in the loose, carrying regularly and also making a hatful of tackles around the park as the hosts defeated Rosslyn Park 43-10 at Old Bath Road.
Having been ruled out late on before the Chinnor game the week before, former Wallingford man Ant reached his milestone and said: “I wasn’t the greatest scrummager when I came here, but lads like Matt Weller, Jack Steadman, obviously James Baker, Turkey (Sean McDonnell-Roberts) take you aside and help bring you on. Credit to them and the coaches with the work they put in.
“The team spirit is fantastic and that probably comes down to the coaches – the club has always been great to be around, but especially at the moment.”
Rams were forced to defend for much of the opening 20 minutes, but came on strong as the game progressed as Connor Hayhow and Axel Kalling-Smith both scored twice, Zach Clow, Max Hayman and Ellis Jones also crossing the whitewash.
And continued: “It was a great performance. The backs were outstanding, but I’m not going to take anything away from the forwards either – we gave them the platform, and they made the most of it.
“We struggled a bit with the line-out – they might have known our calls thanks to Cam Zeiss – but we worked that out at half-time and having built into the game, the dominance came towards the end.
“We’ve worked on a few things in training in the past couple of weeks, and I think that’s really starting to pay off. We’ll look to build again for next week.”
Another bumper crowd of 953 supported the hosts to a victory which leaves them seven points clear at the top of the table, and Ant ended by thanking them as he said: “The fans get behind you – I thought they were particularly noisy.
“There were a few Rosslyn fans down in clubhouse corner, so our guys shouted louder than normal. It was a great atmosphere and made it special for the players.”
